The Expendables 4 isn’t the last we’ve seen of the ultra-macho series of hit action films. One of its stars, Randy Couture, has teased a sequel.

Speaking exclusively to Men’s Journal, Couture shed light on the future of the franchise as well as the likelihood of his fan-favourite character, Toll Road, returning.

“I think there's some talk now,” Couture says. “You know, Statham has stepped up in four pretty significantly. I heard and read an article where he was talking about approaching Guy Ritchie, who gave him his start in the industry, about being a director for an Expendables, which would be a huge thing, and Guy is amazing.”

While it’s not been officially greenlit, getting Guy Ritchie on board to direct The Expendables 5 would be a major coup for the series. As for Couture, who’s played hardened combat veteran Toll Road in all four movies dating back to the first in 2010, he’d love to reprise his role.

“At the end of the day, there's numbers involved there, and if four did well enough on the financial side of things then I'd say the property is certainly still alive. There's scuttlebutt about a fifth movie in the works, but we'll see.”

Couture also looked backed fondly on making the first film, which is still the highest-grossing movie in the series with $274 million worldwide.

“I think the first one was the one that caught everybody's attention. This crazy ensemble cast. You got Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis and and Sly Stallone, three of the biggest box office draws in over 30 years on screen for the first time together in that film….It was definitely one of my favorites, and one of those ‘pinch me’ moments where I'm like ‘what the hell am I doing here?’ It was a fun one.”

2023’s The Expendables 4 was the lowest-grossing series entry, earning just $51m at the global box office. Couture, however, has plenty of other irons in the fire, including upcoming horror film Pitfall, his commentary work with PFL (Professional Fighters League), his charity Xtreme Couture GI Foundation which raises money for US combat veterans, and his successful Affliction clothing line.

“There seems to be a resurgence right now with this younger generation,” Couture says of Affliction. “This TikTok crowd and these graphic-driven shirts. They seem to come back into vogue for some reason, which is awesome…with a name like Couture, fashion and clothing was something I was aware of most of my life.”
