Israel Adesanya believes the UFC 324 headliner between Justin Gaethje and Paddy Pimblett may end up being remembered as far more than just another thrilling main event. The former UFC middleweight champion recently drew comparisons between the bout and one of the most pivotal fights in the promotion’s history- Forrest Griffin vs. Stephan Bonnar at The Ultimate Fighter 1 finale.
Adesanya stated, “On the spike TV deal, Stephan Bonnar and Forrest Griffin showed out [at the tuf 1 finale] and made the whole world go, ‘what the f---?” Continuing further, he said, “This is like part two, I guess, because that’s the new deal with Paramount and then the main event f------ showed out…A lot of eyes on this, and the main event delivered [between Gaethje and Pimblett], which is what you want.”

Adesanya explained that the context surrounding Gaethje vs. Pimblett made it especially significant. With the UFC entering a new broadcast era following its deal with Paramount, the promotion needed a fight capable of instantly grabbing the attention of casual viewers and new fans. In his view, the UFC 324 main event delivered exactly that.
Reflecting on Griffin vs. Bonnar, Adesanya noted how neither fighter set out to change the sport, yet their unforgettable war helped catapult the UFC into mainstream consciousness. The fight became a cultural moment, introducing countless fans to mixed martial arts for the first time. Adesanya suggested Gaethje and Pimblett stepped into a similar situation, whether intentionally or not.
According to Adesanya, the combination of Gaethje’s reputation as one of the sport’s most violent and reliable action fighters and Pimblett’s ability to draw attention made the matchup impossible to ignore.
Adesanya emphasized that the timing of Gaethje vs. Pimblett was just as important as the performance itself. Much like the UFC needed Griffin and Bonnar to make noise during the Spike TV era, the promotion now required a statement fight to usher in its new partnership with Paramount.
The former champion pointed out that moments like these are what expand the UFC’s audience beyond its core fan base. A chaotic, emotionally charged fight can hook viewers who might otherwise overlook the sport. Adesanya argued that when a main event produces that ‘what did I just watch?’ reaction, it serves the UFC’s long-term growth in a way few promotional efforts can.
In Adesanya’s view, UFC 324 needed a defining moment, and Gaethje and Pimblett rose to the occasion. Whether history ultimately agrees with the comparison, the bout has already sparked conversations about its place in the UFC’s evolving story.
