It was an utterly disastrous end to the premier promotion’s return to Abu Dhabi on Saturday night, and an even worse night for Tom Aspinall.

On Saturday, Tom Aspinall took on Ciryl Gane in the UFC 321 main event, defending his undisputed heavyweight title for the first time.

Despite the excitement and anticipation coming into the event, disaster struck in the opening round when the French challenger landed an unintentional double eye poke on Aspinall.

After taking several minutes to try and recover, the champion told the doctor and referee that he couldn’t see out of one of his eyes, resulting in the fight being ruled a no contest.

Aspinall told he should have continued by UFC legend

Immediately after the fight, Aspinall’s distress was clear and he just wanted to leave the Octagon to receive proper medical attention.

Instead, though, the UFC kept him in the Octagon so that he could be interviewed by Daniel Cormier, despite not being able to see anything out of one eye.

During his Octagon interview, the crowd in attendance in Abu Dhabi began booing the Brit, which left him fuming as he went on to question them and criticize them before leaving the cage.

And things seemingly got worse for Aspinall as in the post-fight press conference, UFC boss Dana White stated that ‘Aspinall didn’t want to fight’, which has resulted in fans thinking he is angry with the champion.

Despite having been transported to hospital because of the severity of his injury, Aspinall has been told he should’ve carried on fighting with one eye by UFC legend Chael Sonnen.

“Being poked in the eye is illegal, but to fight with one eye is very common,” Sonnen said on the ESPN post-fight show.

“In all fairness, if you’re the heavyweight champion of the world, you’ve got to fight with one eye at times… If you get poked in the eye and you’re injured, we have a totally different conversation, but if you get poked in the eye and you can’t see, generally in our sport that’s just something you’ve got to push through,” Sonnen continued.

Dana White wants to book rematch

‘Bon Gamin’ started the fight extremely well and had even drawn blood on the nose of Aspinall, which he would’ve likely taken a lot of confidence in going into the next rounds.

And with the fight having been inconclusive, White stated in the post-fight press conference that he is going to look at rebooking the fight for as soon as possible, with both December and January potential dates for the rematch.
