Tom Aspinall makes the first defense of his UFC Heavyweight Title against Ciryl Gane at UFC 321 on Saturday, as we look at the stats.

Aspinall faces the pressure to perform, given it is his first defense. While he is the champion, he was elevated from his interim status once Jones retired from the sport and vacated the belt in June. Tom is the longest interim champion in the UFC’s history, something he will want to put behind with a dominant win.

Aspinall arrives into the fight with three first-round finishes, beating Marcin Tybura, Sergei Pavlovich and Curtis Blaydes, respectively. Meanwhile, Gane has his third title shot. He was knocked out by Francis Ngannou at UFC 270, followed by a first-round submission loss against Jones at UFC 285. Now, he has the chance to get over the line. With two wins on the bounce since the Jones loss, beating Serghei Spivac and Alexander Volkov, Gane will fancy his chances.

Pre-Fight

“We don’t move like heavyweights. We’ve both got good footwork, we both manage the distance well. We don’t just go in swinging; we’re both technical, tactical, good movers, big athletic guys. I think it makes for a good match,” Aspinall

“This is a big challenge, and everybody knows that. I have been training since March, trying to prepare for this as Tom was already interim champion before he was the real champion, so there was always a chance we would meet. This fight the pressure is different to Francis and Jon Jones. The first fight [against Ngannou] there was so much pressure. Against Jon Jones it was a little less and now even less against Tom. I’ve had a solid camp and I am ready. I know my strengths, I know his strengths, very technical, very fast on the feet. But I am ready to become champion on Saturday,” Gane

The Statistics

Aspinall is arguably one of the most devastating strikers, with the shortest average fight time in UFC history at just 2 minutes and 2 seconds. This was across nine fights with only 18 minutes and 21 seconds total time spent in the octagon. Gane has a career total of 1,547 strikes thrown—1,315 more than Aspinall’s entire UFC career of 232 strikes—yet it is Aspinall who has more knockouts.

Aspinall’s grappling also favors him. His eight wins are via stoppage in his nine UFC fights, with six of those coming by striking. His rematch win against Curtis Blaydes, a 60-second knockout, proves that. Aspinall also boasts a 100% takedown accuracy compared to Gane’s takedown accuracy at 25%, as he is considered the heavy favorite. However, with the expectation to win, Tom cannot come up short.
