In a matter of hours, Tom Aspinall will make the first defense of his undisputed heavyweight title.
Comments from his father during UFC 321 fight week suggest that Aspinall might not stay at the top for a long time even if he keeps winning.
The Brit is set to face the former interim champion Ciryl Gane in the main event on Saturday night.
Heading into this matchup, there has been a lot of talk about whether the challenger can be the first person to test the champion in the later rounds.
While this has only made Aspinall more confident in beating Gane, one of the greatest fighters of all time highlighted it as a potential concern.
While Daniel Cormier believes Tom Aspinall can establish himself as a dominant champion due to the competition that is around him, a different former champion did raise some concerns.
In a recent video for Covers, Georges St-Pierre gave his thoughts on some of the top matchups that are set to take place at UFC 321.
‘GSP’ speaks highly of Aspinall, and the feeling is mutual, with the undisputed UFC heavyweight champion labelling St-Pierre the greatest of all time.
Aspinall, who claimed to get “goosebumps” when his idol first commented on one of his posts in 2021, wasn’t the fighter that St-Pierre said is his most confident prediction.
The next challenger for the undisputed UFC heavyweight title will likely be decided when Alexander Volkov faces Jailton Almeida on the main card.
After acknowledging that there are still some unanswered questions regarding Aspinall, it was a different heavyweight matchup where St-Pierre put his faith.
“If I would need to bet my house on a fight and choose the method in which the fighter will win the fight, I would go for Almeida TKO in the first round. If you look historically, a lot of his fights finish in the first round and Volkov is a guy that’s a slow starter a little bit. He’s very good in the deep waters and he’s very tall. I think Almeida could finish the fight early on.
While Georges St-Pierre didn’t give a prediction for Tom Aspinall’s fight with Ciryl Gane, he believes the defending champion is one of the best fighters in the world right now.
The former welterweight and middleweight champion was asked in the same video to name who he believes is the best pound-for-pound fighter in the sport today.
After being given names like Ilia Topuria, Merab Dvalishvili, and Islam Makhachev to pick from, St-Pierre explained why Aspinall should also be in that conversation.
“I would also add Tom Aspinall into that list right now because you have to remember, as a heavyweight, it’s very, very, very hard to have a long winning streak and Tom Aspinall right now has crazy momentum. He’s unbelievable.”
St-Pierre named Makhachev as the fighter he believes is the best of the best.
