Ilia Topuria says losing his UFC lightweight title to Justin Gaethje five months ago was the worst moment of his fighting life.

The former featherweight champion dropped his 155-pound debut in June at UFC's White House event, suffering the first defeat of his MMA career on the South Lawn in front of millions. That kind of public setback has broken fighters before, but Topuria told MMAmania this week that his resolve has not cracked. "I've been in the worst situation a fighter can possibly be in," he said. "I've experienced the worst day of my profession. What's worse than that? Dying."

Topuria Maintains Mental Edge Ahead Of 2027 Return

Topuria made clear he refuses to accept the loss as a reflection of who he is. "I wake up in the morning and look at myself in the mirror, and I'm like: no, no, no, no, this isn't me," he said in the interview. UFC president Dana White confirmed last month that the Georgian-Spanish fighter will return in early 2027, though no opponent or date has been announced.

The 27-year-old had built a reputation as one of the sport's most confident finishers before moving up from featherweight, where he held the title after knocking out Alexander Volkanovski. The Gaethje bout marked his first test against a top-tier lightweight.

Topuria is expected to resume training camp before the end of the year.
