Welcome to the latest UFC results from Ringside Intel. Tonight, we present to you a double-championship event, as UFC 312 takes place from the Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney, Australia.
This marks the first trip back to Australia since September 2023 and UFC 293, which featured Sean Strickland claiming the middleweight title from Israel Adesanya. Can history repeat itself?
In the main event, Strickland, once again the challenger, takes on reigning titleholder Dricus du Plessis in a rematch. Du Plessis claimed the belt at UFC 297 last year with a split decision.
But that is not all. In the co-main event, Zhang Weili puts her women’s strawweight gold on the line against top contender and former Ultimate Fighter winner Tatiana Suarez.
Other fighters set for action on the main card include Justin Tafa, Jimmy Crute and Jake Matthews. The main card airs live on ESPN+ pay-per-view with prelims on ESPN2, Disney+, ESPN+ and even UFC Fight Pass.
The promotion finally returns home to Las Vegas next week for UFC Fight Night: Cannonier vs. Rodrigues. Set for the UFC Apex, Jared Cannonier collides with Gregory Rodrigues along with Calvin Kattar taking on Youssef Zalal.
Now, let’s get to the results!
For the better part of five rounds, Dricus du Plessis dominated Sean Strickland on his way to a successful title defense of the UFC middleweight belt. DuPlessis, who won the belt from Strickland, landed a shot that broke the nose of the top contender.
Du Plessis finished with a significant advantage in strikes landed both to the body and legs. He also connected with the lone takedown of the match.
Considered a betting underdog, Zhang Weili showed why that was incorrect. With a dominating five-round performance, she secured her UFC female strawweight title with a decision victory over Tatiana Suarez.
The 34-year-old from China has now earned three defenses in her second reign as champion. She is on a five-fight win streak and is 26-3 now overall.
