With Jon Jones recently retiring this year, the UFC heavyweight division is finally moving forward towards a new era as the former interim heavyweight champion, Tom Aspinall, can finally set his sights on other challengers since being promoted to undisputed champion. Aspinall had been trying to book a heavyweight champion unification bout with Jones for a long time, but now, he is finally returning to competition since July 2024.

The upcoming UFC card this weekend is headlined by a title fight where the newly-appointed undisputed UFC heavyweight champion, Tom Aspinall, makes his first defense against the formidable French striker, Ciryl Gane.

Stacked Card with Title Fights

As one of the last remaining pay-per-view events under the ESPN banner, this card will have two title fights, with a heavyweight title on the line and a new strawweight champion to be crowned.

In the co-Main event, the vacant strawweight championship between Virna Jandiroba and Mackenzie Dern represents a significant moment for the 115-pound division. With the dominant former champion Zhang Weili vacating the strawweight belt to vie for the flyweight title, this rematch of their 2020 bout (which Dern won by decision) will determine the division’s new queen.

Before that, Umar Nurmagomedov faces Mario Bautista in a matchup which was originally scheduled for UFC Vancouver last week but moved to this Abu Dhabi card. Nurmagomedov enters the Octagon for the first time since January, after a failed but valiant shot at the title against Merab Dvalishvili.

The main card also features a compelling heavyweight contender bout between Alexander Volkov and Jailton Almeida. Volkov, who lost a controversial split decision to Gane at the end of last year, looks to bounce back into the win column against a tough stylistic matchup in Almeida, a relentless grappler. The winner of this bout will likely be rewarded with a heavyweight title shot.
