The middleweight division gets a fascinating stylistic showdown on the UFC 322 undercard as prospect Bo Nickal meets elite grappler Rodolfo Vieira.
Nickal (7-1) enters this bout with a point to prove. Since his sole defeat, many have questioned just how far Nickal can go in the UFC, and some even saying he’s been pushed too far by the UFC which has effectively exposed his current poor skill level.
Vieira (11-3) is one of the most accomplished Brazilian jiu-jitsu competitors ever to enter the UFC. A multiple-time ADCC and IBJJF world champion, Vieira’s submission arsenal is among the best in the middleweight division.

Nickal’s top control is smothering, and his finishing instincts for submissions are far ahead of typical early-career prospects. Still, this is Nickal’s first true elite grappling test. While he’s submitted opponents before, he hasn’t faced someone who can threaten him on the ground in the way Vieira can.
Vieira’s path to victory is simple in theory but difficult in execution: he must find a way to force grappling exchanges where his jiu-jitsu can overwhelm Nickal. He’s physically strong, technically brilliant, and once he gets into dominant positions, it’s often only a matter of time.
The biggest concerns for Vieira are his cardio and wrestling. While he has improved defensively on the feet, he still struggles to set up takedowns against high-level wrestlers and can slow down in later rounds. Nickal’s pace and athleticism could amplify those weaknesses.
We saw exactly what happened when Nickal got pressured in his last fight. He ultimately showed zero composure and lost in brutal fashion to Reinier de Ridder. Of course, Vieira is not on the level of the Dutchman from a striking point of view.
I don’t want to sound too dramatic, but Nickal’s status in the UFC is on the line here. Another loss in brutal fashion would set him back a long way, to the point where he will have to work his way back up to a spot on the UFC numbered cards.
I have zero confidence in taking Bo Nickal at those short prices after his last showing. Quite often in these type of grappler vs grappler fights, neither man shoots, resulting in a stand-up battle. And although Vieira isn’t a great striker, neither is Nickal. I’m taking a small gamble on Rodolfo Vieira to win by KO/TKO at odds of 15.00 .
