Heading to Atlanta for the first time since 2019, the UFC is set to deliver a monumental clash between welterweight titans during UFC Atlanta, as surging phenom Joaquin Buckley continues his onslaught towards title contention when he faces former champion Kamaru Usman during the UFC Atlanta main event. In the co-main event, Miranda Maverick seeks to acquire the biggest win of her career when she battles previous strawweight queen Rose Namajunas.
Since dropping to the 170-lb division in 2023, Buckley has strung together a massive six-fight win streak ahead of UFC Atlanta, which has seen the toppling of notable contenders like Vicente Luque, Stephen Thompson and one-time interim belt-holder Colby Covington. Taking on his most high-profile foe to date, “New Mansa” is dead set on defeating another welterweight legend as he collides with the man who some consider the all-time great of the weight class in the UFC Atlanta main event.
Returning to competition after a nearly two-year hiatus, Usman will have a lot on his plate as he aims to halt the warpath of the streaking Buckley in UFC Atlanta. While his age and recent losses may deter fans from picking him to get his hand raised, the wealth of experience that “The Nigerian Nightmare” brings to the table could make his younger opponent’s night in the Octagon a long one.
Undefeated in her last four contests, Maverick now resides on the verge of achieving her first top 10 ranking in the UFC women’s flyweight class. Though her upcoming foe possesses an established pedigree as one of the greatest female fighters ever, the Team Elevation product is no stranger to facing top-level opposition, having fought the likes of Maycee Barber and Erin Blanchfield.
Looking to return to the win column after losing a close unanimous decision match to Blanchfield in her last time out, Namajunas enters her first 125-lb scrap of the year after an extremely active 2024, which saw her compete three times. In search of a dream super fight with Valentina Shevchenko, the battle-tested “Thug” will strive to earn her third overall victory in her new division in what will be her 18th overall UFC appearance.
