The dramatic, often turbulent lives of fighters have been captured in biopics and documentaries, depicting their journeys from obscurity to glory. These stories tend to resonate with audiences because they embody the raw perseverance it takes for these athletes to triumph over their struggles.

Many of these trailblazing stories have been brought to life in recent years, with projects like Zhang Weili’s upcoming biopic series, and A24’s “Smashing Machine” hitting theaters this summer. Now, an MMA legend who paved the path for women in the sport will have her story told.

According to Deadline, Netflix is moving forward with a highly anticipated biopic about UFC and WWE superstar Ronda Rousey, with "Euphoria" director Augustine Frizzell set to direct.

The film will chronicle her journey from Olympic judo bronze medalist to UFC champion and WWE trailblazer, and will be based on Rousey’s memoirs “My Fight/Your Fight” and “Our Fight.”

After years in development, the project has gained momentum with Rousey herself penning the script in just seven days.

Director Augustine Frizzell, known for her work on the hit HBO show “Euphoria,” is a longtime Rousey fan and admitted to reading both memoirs before even being considered for the job.

Frizzell is balancing the project with her work on the upcoming Netflix sci-fi series, “The Boroughs,” a show that will be produced by the creators of “Stranger Things.”

Rousey’s biopic has been a decade in the making, according to Deadline. Paramount initially acquired the rights to My Fight/Your Fight in 2015, but executive turnover and delays led to the rights lapsing.

Netflix seized the opportunity, especially after Rousey’s second memoir was released last year, and expanded the scope of her story, and included details of her suffering her first loss to Holly Holm and contemplating suicide post-fight.

With the script finalized and Frizzell attached, the next major step is casting, a challenge given Rousey’s unique blend of athleticism, charisma, and intensity. While no names have been mentioned just yet, the lead role will demand an actor capable of capturing Rousey’s physicality and emotional depth.
