Ronda Rousey’s recent remarks have put her back in the spotlight.
Back in 2013, she made history at UFC 157 by defeating Liz Carmouche in the promotion’s first women’s fight. Rousey then went on a dominant run as bantamweight champion, finishing every opponent until she suffered her first defeat.
That changed after back-to-back losses to Holly Holm and Amanda Nunes, which marked the end of her time in the Octagon. Since then, fans haven’t shown her nearly as much support.
On Bert Kreischer’s YouTube podcast, the former Olympic bronze medalist didn’t hold back, calling MMA fans fickle for turning on fighters after a loss.
But not everyone agrees with her take. One of Rousey’s fellow UFC legends believes she might be off the mark.
Ronda Rousey’s remarks quickly spread around the mixed martial arts community and drew out plenty of reactions. Former UFC title challenger Chael Sonnen was among those calling out her take.
“Nobody’s even thinking about you,” Sonnen said. “Except the ones that are in your house, your neighborhood, your community.
“Nobody has any opinion or love for you or hatred for you, whatsoever. That’s always been a part that I never felt she understood.
“It’s not personal, and they don’t really not like you,” he continued. “The part that you had wrong is when you thought that they were with you and they loved you.
“They were never with you and they never loved you, and there’s nothing mean about that. It’s called being a fan.”
Ronda Rousey’s recent comments have stirred up a lot of discussion. At UFC 157 in 2013, she defeated Liz Carmouche in what was the promotion’s first women’s fight. ‘Rowdy’ went on to have a dominant run as bantamweight champion, finishing all her opponents until she suffered her first loss.
After being knocked out by Holly Holm and then losing again to Amanda Nunes in what turned out to be her final bout, the former judoka hasn’t felt the same support from fans.
Appearing on Bert Kreischer’s YouTube podcast recently, the 2008 Olympic bronze medalist criticised MMA fans, calling them fickle and quick to abandon fighters after a loss.
But not everyone agrees with her assessment.
Sonnen addressed the topic in a video posted to his YouTube channel. He explained why he thinks Rousey misunderstood how MMA fans operate.
“Nobody’s even thinking about you,” Sonnen said. “Except the ones that are in your house, your neighborhood, your community.”
“Nobody has any opinion or love for you or hatred for you, whatsoever. That’s always been a part that I never felt she understood.”
He continued: “It’s not personal, and they don’t really not like you. The part that you had wrong is when you thought that they were with you and they loved you.”
“They were never with you and they never loved you, and there’s nothing mean about that. It’s called being a fan.”
The comments came soon after fresh rumours of a possible return began circulating. Taking to social media earlier this year, she shared updates about getting back into training. Her caption suggested she was rediscovering her passion for fighting again.
