UFC Rio Post-Event Tidbits: Lightweight Juggernaut Makes Exciting Return

UFC Rio is in the books, and with it, a former champion has reclaimed his place in the win column in exciting fashion. Returning to action after previously being knocked out at UFC 317 by Ilia Topuria , Charles Oliveira dazzled audiences in his home country of Brazil by tapping out Mateusz Gamrot.

In the second to last bout on the card, former flyweight champion Deiveson Figueiredo took home a competitive split decision over the streaking Montel Jackson, netting him his first win at 135-lb in over a year. 

Now, let’s take a look at some of the most interesting post-event facts from the main card of UFC Rio.

UFC Rio: Kaan Ofli def. Richard Ramos

Kaan Ofli

His win over Ramos was his first non-exhibition victory since February 2023. He had previously been on a two-fight losing streak, with setbacks to Mairon Santos and Muhammad Naimov.

The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt has now won six of his 12 wins as a professional by submission. It was also his first triumph in the UFC since joining the promotion last year

Ricardo Ramos

Ramos’ UFC Rio loss to Kaan Ofli is the fourth tapout loss of his professional career, with all of those coming in the first round. He is now on a two-bout losing skid, having not gotten his hand raised since earning a split decision win over Josh Culibao more than a year ago.

His UFC record now stands at 8-7 

UFC Rio: Mario Pinto def. Jhonata Diniz

Mario Pinto

Pinto’s UFC Rio  win over Diniz was his 11th straight victory. It’s also his third consecutive stoppage after finishing Lucas Camacho on the Contender Series and Austin Lane in his company debut.

He has not lost a contest since competing in his final scrap as an amateur back in 2020. 

Jhonata Diniz

Diniz’ loss to Pinto is his first defeat since November of last year after previously besting promotional debutant Alvin Hines at UFC 317. The defeat was also the second stoppage setback of his career 

He is now 2-2 in his last four bouts. 

UFC Rio: Joel Álvarez def. Vicente Luque

Alvarez’s win over Luque served as his fourth straight after losing to Arman Tsarukyan at UFC Fight Night: Makhachev vs. Green in 2022. The fight also was his first appearance at welterweight after previously competing at both featherweight and lightweight. 

The victory over Luque brought an end to his 100 percent finishing record after earning stoppages in all of his past 23 wins. 

Vicente Luque 

Luque’s loss to Álvarez was his second defeat in a row after losing to Kevin Holland at UFC 316 earlier this year. He has now lost seven of his twelve professional contests by decision. 

His UFC record now stands at 16-8.

UFC Rio: Deiveson Figueiredo def. Montel Jackson

Figueiredo’s UFC Rio win over Jackson ended a previous two-fight losing streak after dropping a pair of matches to Petr Yan and Cory Sandhagen. He now returns to the winner’s circle Since August of 2024 after outpointing Marlon Vera.

His appearance at UFC Rio was his sixth appearance at bantamweight in the UFC after moving up to the weight class from flyweight in 2023. It’s also the first time he competed in Brazil since January 2023 at UFC 283.

Montel Jackson

His loss to Figueiredo brought to an end his previous six-fight winning streak dating back over five years. It also was the first time in his combat sports career that he ever lost of mixed marital arts bout by split decision, making it the third loss of his professional tenure coming by way of the scorecards. 

His UFC record now stands at 9-3.

UFC Rio: Charles Oliveira def. Mateusz Gamrot

Oliveira’s win over Gamrot is his 36th victory as a professional. It marked his first triumph by submission since tapping out Justin Gaethje at UFC 274 back in 2022. It also extended his lead in several of the UFC’s most prestigious records, including most submission wins at 17, most post-fight awards at 21 and most finishes at 21.

Mateusz Gamrot

Gamrot’s loss to Oliveira is his first defeat since coming up short to Dan Hooker at UFC 305 last year. It also marked the first stoppage setback of his combat sports career.

He is now 2-2 in his last four contests. His UFC record stands at 8-4.
