UFC Veteran Brands Islam Makhachev vs. Ilia Topuria A Once-in-a-Generation Superfight

There is no doubt that in the UFC, there are not always superfights that excite fans and draw millions of viewers. Currently, that superfight is the potential clash between Islam Makhachev and Ilia Topuria. Both have already exchanged plenty of shots at each other. Now, Michael Bisping is hyping the potential fight as a once-in-a-generation fight.

The former UFC champ acknowledged Justin Gaethje is the interim champion and should fight undisputed champion Topuria. However, he feels this superfight would have the whole world tuning in with millions watching.

He said, “There’s no bigger fight right now than Islam Makhachev vs. Ilia Topuria. I know Justin is the interim and Ilia is undisputed, and that should happen, but this is a once-in-a-lifetime occasion. The whole world would be tuning in. There are going to be millions of people watching it.”

Makhachev recently expressed interest in fighting Topuria, likely at welterweight, where Makhachev reigns as champion. He told Serbian outlet Telegraf he likes the idea, if the UFC wants it and fans want it, he’s ready. The Dagestani also expressed interest in fighting at the upcoming White House event, which would elevate the spectacle even more, given the historic setting.

Islam Makhachev And Ilia Topuria Might Fight At The Welterweight Class

Earlier, Topuria even stated that he is ready to chase the Dagestani and fight at welterweight after the Dagestani said he is comfortable at welterweight and does not want to move down. Makhachev is naturally bigger and just proved he can dominate at 170 pounds. Topuria would be moving up from featherweight, where he’s already physically smaller than most lightweights.

The White House setting makes this matchup even more compelling. Historic venue, two champions, pound-for-pound implications, everything aligns for an all-time great fight if they can make it happen. Even if it does not take place on June 14, it can happen after Topuria handles his mandatory defense against Gaethje.
