Tom Aspinall immediately became the heavyweight champion when Jon Jones announced his retirement. The UFC also booked Aspinall vs. Cyril Gane to keep the division active, but an eye poke left the English fighter injured, and the division faced another setback. However, UFC veteran Chael Sonnen predicted that Gable Steveson was going to be the next heavyweight star.
Sonnen believed Steveson could be the UFC’s fast-track replacement for Jon Jones at heavyweight. The UFC veteran believed that the promotion would push Steveson quickly into major fights and market him as the next big heavyweight star. In a video, the 49-year-old said:
“Jon doesn’t pay attention to our industry. He doesn’t know how you would promote something. He just doesn’t understand these types of things. So I’m gonna just predict that Gable is gonna get real fast track.”
