The betting odds for UFC Freedom 250 are in, and they tell two very different stories at the top of the card.
Ilia Topuria is an overwhelming favourite to retain his lightweight title against Justin Gaethje, while the co-main event between Alex Pereira and Ciryl Gane is as close to a coin flip as the oddsmakers could make it.
Topuria opens at -1000 against Gaethje's +525, making him one of the heaviest favourites seen in a UFC main event in recent memory. A $100 bet on Topuria returns just $10 in profit. The same stake on Gaethje returns $525 should the American pull off what would be a monumental upset. The odds reflect Topuria's unbeaten record and the manner in which he has finished his last three opponents — all former or current champions, all stopped.
The co-main event is a different picture entirely. Pereira, making his heavyweight debut, is a marginal -120 favourite over Gane, who sits at -110. The odds acknowledge both the uncertainty of how Pereira's skills translate to 265 pounds and Gane's credentials as a former interim heavyweight champion who has been at the top of the division for several years.
Gaethje enters the main event on the back of a unanimous decision win over Paddy Pimblett at UFC 324 that earned him interim lightweight status. It is his third shot at becoming undisputed lightweight champion, having previously been submitted by Khabib Nurmagomedov and stopped by Charles Oliveira — the same Oliveira that Topuria finished in round one.
Pereira's move to heavyweight is the fight within the fight for the co-main event. The Brazilian is a two-division UFC champion — light heavyweight and middleweight — and one of the most dangerous strikers in the sport regardless of weight class. Whether that striking translates cleanly against a heavyweight who can match him physically is the question Gane, a technical and mobile fighter, is well placed to answer.
