NEW YORK — So much for “toughest test in years.” Valentina Shevchenko reminded everyone why she’s one of the greatest fighters in women’s MMA history on Saturday night, turning a highly anticipated superfight into a one-sided masterclass. Over five dominant rounds at UFC 322 inside Madison Square Garden, Shevchenko (26-4-1 MMA, 15-3-1 UFC) shut down Zhang Weili (26-4 MMA, 10-3 UFC) and cruised to a unanimous decision victory to retain her flyweight title. Scores weren’t needed to know the result this was all Shevchenko.

Shevchenko Mauls Zhang on the Ground

Zhang came in as the former strawweight champion, having vacated her 115-pound belt to chase greatness at 125. Instead, she spent most of the night stuck underneath a champion who looked utterly unbothered by the move-up challenge.

Shevchenko’s game plan was simple and ruthless: Takedown. Control. Repeat.

She dragged Zhang to the canvas again and again, effortlessly transitioning between side control and half guard and occasionally hunting the crucifix position that’s become a trademark of her dominance. Zhang’s attempts to scramble free were smothered by Shevchenko’s top pressure and positional awareness.

Even on the Feet, It Was Valentina’s World

The standup exchanges were fewer than many expected, but when they did break out of the clinch or get back to range, Shevchenko still held the edge.

Her kicks, knees, and straight punches all found a home. Zhang never really solved the puzzle, struggling to land anything meaningful that could deter the champion or shift the momentum. Anytime Zhang seemed close to building something, Shevchenko either beat her to the punch or changed levels and put her back on the mat.

With the win, Shevchenko extends her winning streak to three, cementing that the only fighters to ever beat her are Amanda Nunes (twice) and Alexa Grasso the latter of whom she later avenged.

What’s Next? Valentina Calls Her Shots

After the fight, Shevchenko wasted no time lining up possible future challenges. She name-checked:

  • Natalia Silva

  • Erin Blanchfield

  • Kayla Harrison (the UFC women’s bantamweight champion)

Any of those matchups would carry serious intrigue, but the message was clear: Shevchenko is still hunting legacy, not just title defenses.

Zhang at a Crossroads

For Zhang, the loss snaps a five-fight winning streak and complicates her future. She moved up to flyweight with the strawweight division already shifting beneath her, as Mackenzie Dern now holds the 115-pound title.

In the cage, Zhang admitted she’s undecided about her next move whether to stay at 125 and adjust to the new weight class or return to 115 and chase gold again in a division she once ruled. Either way, UFC 322 made one thing obvious: at flyweight, everyone is still chasing Valentina Shevchenko.
