Valentina Shevchenko defends her UFC flyweight title against Zhang Weili, as we preview this upcoming fight.
Shevchenko defended her title against Manon Fiorot at UFC 315, which was the first defense of her belt during her second reign. She acquired the belt against Alexa Grasso at UFC 306 by beating Alexa Grasso in their trilogy fight at UFC 306 in September 2024. Meanwhile, Zhang is fresh off a title defense of her own, defeating Tatiana Suarez at UFC 312 in February to retain her strawweight belt before vacating it.
“For me, it’s definitely a very important fight. But it’s kind of like I’m trying to get away from everything that’s happening around this fight – what people are saying. You know me for a long time enough to understand my approach to the preparation for the fight. You know my personality. That’s why I’m trying to keep away all my mind about what’s happening. I know, to win the fight, it will take all dedication – not half, not like 90 percent, not 98 percent. It will take 100 and more. That’s why I give all my dedication to that (preparation),” Valentina said
Shevchenko will likely look to exploit Zhang’s move up in weight and her natural aggression by maintaining her preferred kicking range. She excels as a counter-striker, and her primary goal will be to utilize her fluid footwork to punish opponents who overcommit, often utilizing lethal low kicks early to disrupt the challenger’s rhythm. Should Zhang succeed in closing the distance, Shevchenko will immediately deploy her dominant Muay Thai clinch work, using knees and elbows.
Weili’s strategy will involve immediate, relentless forward pressure, utilizing feints and explosive entries to close the distance and take away Shevchenko’s kicking space. Zhang needs to pin the champion onto the cage, where Shevchenko is less mobile, allowing Zhang to unleash her powerful boxing combinations. Zhang must commit fully to blending her striking with her formidable wrestling and grappling. After landing a combination, she should pivot immediately to a takedown attempt or a powerful clinch entry. This unpredictability prevents Shevchenko from simply sitting back and counter-striking.
