Patrick Williams' painful left foot will undergo more testing, and his return date has yet to be set
USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago Bulls are already without All-Star guard Zach LaVine and reliable “3-and-D” forward Torrey Craig. Now, they have to traverse the season without forward Patrick Williams, who’s experiencing soreness in his left midfoot and is heading back to Chicago to undergo further testing to determine the injury's severity and the best course of action moving forward.

Dealt with injuries all season long

Williams has missed only four games this season despite dealing with a right ankle injury and a sore left foot. The Florida State product revealed that he had been trying to manage his injuries, but the pain and discomfort had gotten too severe to ignore.

“It was just gradual. It’s been awhile. I’ve been trying to do maintenance on it, do pregame work on it, postgame work on it. That Laker game kind of hit the peak for me,” Williams said.

Williams’ foot is now in a walking boot to help with the pain and swelling. It was an idea that Williams initially resisted but was eventually convinced by the team’s medical staff.

“You always want to take caution. It’s one of those situations where the benefit of it, whether I needed it or not, kind of outweighed the look of it. Naturally, I’d consider, ‘Hell no.’ I know what it looks like to wear a boot. You never want to just have to wear one of those. But they spoke to me about the benefit of wearing it and kind of de-loading it for a couple days,” Williams shared.

No concrete timeline for a return to action

Williams consulted with a specialist in Los Angeles, but all that came out of that was a recommendation for the 23-year-old to immobilize his foot for the time being.

“(The Los Angeles doctor) just recommended keeping his foot immobilized for right now. The biggest thing we’ve got to do is bring him back to Chicago, and there will be a lot more imaging just to see where he’s at, but I think the pain is too great right now for him to play,” Bulls head coach Donovan said.

Williams remained on the bench during their game against the Portland Trail Blazers and remained engaged with his teammates despite being unable to play. He even celebrated with rookie Julian Phillips, who had the best game of his young career, registering 11 points against the Blazers.
