Francesco Bagnaia has reportedly been handed a better offer from Aprilia as the fight for his signature heats up. With Pedro Acosta set to join Ducati, Bagnaia’s exit from the team looks increasingly likely.
The two-time MotoGP champion has made it clear he wants a factory seat and isn’t interested in moving to a satellite team. That leaves Yamaha and Aprilia as the main contenders for his services.
Marco Bezzecchi recently extended his contract with Aprilia, while Jorge Martin is expected to replace Fabio Quartararo at Yamaha.
Bagnaia could end up taking over Alex Rins’ seat at Yamaha, but Massimo Rivola is doing everything he can to lure him in another direction.
Reports from Motorsport ES say Bagnaia turned down Aprilia’s first offer. Initially, he had his eye on a move to a Japanese team, but Honda have decided to look for a younger rider to put alongside Quartararo.
This left Yamaha as the clear frontrunner and they were gaining momentum before Aprilia came back in with renewed interest.
Martin’s expected exit has freed up about €3m (£2.6m), which is believed to be the starting point for discussions between Aprilia and Bagnaia.
Rivola is hoping an emotional appeal can tip the scales. He’s looking to build an all-Italian lineup and Bezzecchi, who already knows Bagnaia well through the VR46 Academy, fits perfectly into that vision.
With Marc Marquez expected to finalise his contract soon, a wave of rider movements could quickly follow as other decisions fall into place.
Yamaha are likely to push Bagnaia for a decision soon, though their focus appears to be on Martin, his rival from the past two seasons.
In contrast, Aprilia have made it clear that Bagnaia is their main priority, and that level of commitment could influence where he ends up.
After being let go by Ducati in harsh fashion, he might prefer joining a team that genuinely wants him. Aprilia have also shown interest in Enea Bastianini, who could serve as an alternative option if talks with Bagnaia fall through.
