It is widely believed that Marc Marquez has signed his new contract for 2027 and beyond, and many think that he could leave Ducati at the end of next year.
With almost everyone out of contract at the end of 2026, the MotoGP rider market moved fast as riders looked to secure new deals. Marquez was at the centre of it, given that he is the defending champion and the best talent on the grid.
Ducati’s main priority was to retain Marquez, and according to various reports, he has agreed to stay with the team. However, the circumstances of the contract are disputed, as both sides want different agreements.
Ducati were hoping he’d agree to a two-year extension through 2028 — a move that would align him with Acosta’s deal. But Marquez is reported to have pushed back against this idea.
The injury setback in 2025 left him feeling unsure about his long-term plans, so now he’s looking for more flexibility by extending only through 2027 with an option for an additional year rather than committing outright until 2028.
Marquez has said before that he’ll step away from MotoGP when he’s no longer able to compete for wins and podiums. So far in 2026, he hasn’t reached the podium yet, with Ducati not holding the same advantage over Aprilia as before, and his injuries haven’t helped.
He wants to avoid being stuck in a situation where he’s not competitive by 2028. That’s why he’s pushing for a one-year extension with an option for another year, and reports suggest that this is the deal Ducati has accepted.
According to GPOne, “many believe” that Ducati have agreed to a 1+1 deal with Marquez for 2027. This would tie him to the team alongside Acosta next season, with a decision on whether he continues into 2028 coming later.
MotoGP commentator Ricard Jove feels it would be wise for Marquez to sign a short-term deal given his current doubts about his fitness. This approach would let him see how he adapts to the new regulations and assess his physical condition before committing further.
Marquez has kept details of his 2027 contract under wraps. While there is talk that the deal, along with others, is in place, it has not been made public as MotoGP teams continue to work through the next Concorde Agreement.
The lack of information has fuelled speculation about Marquez’s future and whether he’s actually committed to Ducati. Some believe he could end up back at Honda, a move that’s been rumoured throughout 2026.
Honda has already brought in Fabio Quartararo from Yamaha and is reportedly close to signing Moto2 talent David Alonso. While this could complicate things, the team would likely be willing to reshuffle if it meant welcoming back one of their top riders.
