Marc Marquez continues to cement himself as a MotoGP legend. Not only did he clinch his 9th title, but he also did it most excitingly and skillfully possible! In a comeback that saw him clench enough points to seal the title. Partly due to his rival having a very off day, where he finished 6th!
The MotoGP world stood still, held its breath, and was shocked as it watched the opening 2020 race in Marc Marquez’s home country of Spain. The Valentino Rossi successor, Fabio Quartararo, was chasing the lead with the same vigor and confidence that he always races with. However, unlike most times in his career, at the time, the eight-time world champion would see all that come back to haunt him. As he fell off his bike, which broke the humerus in his right arm, he wouldn’t finish.
He underwent surgery quickly, and only a few days later, he was back on his bike to drive in FP4. Since he wouldn’t be a MotoGP World Champion without extreme mental toughness, his mental toughness wouldn’t match his physical toughness. Afterwards, he announced he was in too much pain to race and withdrew from the weekend. And after a 2nd surgery, he would withdraw from the rest of the season and even the start of the 2021 season. He did return in the 3rd race of the 2021 season, however.
He amazingly earned three wins in 2021, winning his first race since the injury just six races into his comeback, but that wasn’t the end of Marc Marquez’s struggles with injury. In 2022, practicing for the upcoming GP at Mandalika, you could say it could’ve gotten better for Marc Marquez.
He crashed three times in three practices, and the fourth crash, which would occur on the warm-up lap before the race, would be too much for his body to handle. Marc Márquez was sidelined indefinitely beginning with the Catalan round after having a fourth surgery on his right humerus at the Mayo Clinic to correct a 30-degree rotation of the bone.
He did come back and earned a podium in Australia, which was his only podium of the season. 2023 wouldn’t start off very well either. A crash with Miguel Oliveira both earned him a penalty and caused an injury that prevented him from winning multiple races again.
It was a second straight year where he had only earned a single podium, and that was far from the world championship heights and near-perfect season he had before his injury. So Honda, in a classic cold business move, would cut him, Marc Marquez, and he’d join Ducati. After all these horrible injuries and the people who believed in him to start his career lost that belief in him, many would begin to doubt themselves.
Changing the approach that had brought them so much success, but lacking the confidence they once had to regain that success. But again, Marc Marquez was tougher than most, a requirement to get where he got. So, he would stick to the approach that had earned him eight world titles, and with Ducati believing he could return to his previous form, he would repay that belief.
In 2024, MotoGP fans saw something they hadn’t seen in a few years. That being said, Marc Marquez is winning and being a regular on the podium again. He earned 3 wins late in the year to climb his way to 10 total podiums and a 3rd place finish in points. This was already incredibly admirable and would’ve made most of his fans happy.
But it wouldn’t be enough for Marc Marquez, and that’s why 2025 is when he was well and truly back. Seventeen races into a 22-race season, Marc Marquez has won 11 of the 17 races. With his 2nd place at Japan, Marc Marquez clenched his 9th title, beating out his brother, and tying him with Rossi to become the 3rd most successful motorcycle racer in history.
