23XI Racing president reacts to Bubba Wallace's emotional Brickyard 400 win

Coming into the Brickyard 400, Bubba Wallace was in a familiar position on the playoff bubble.

Both of his prior Cup Series wins, a rain-shortened playoff race at Talladega in 2021 and the 2022 playoff race at Kansas, came when he was not in the championship conversation.

In the two seasons that followed his Kansas win, Wallace uncomfortably sat on or near the cutline to make the playoffs. Entering Indianapolis, he was 16th and in a battle just to make the postseason field once again.

On Wednesday, 23XI Racing president Steve Lauletta appeared on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio and made it clear that the confidence was still with Wallace despite a trying season that has featured six DNFs.

"I think they've been running really well all year, so nobody was ever losing faith that this is what the end result was going to be that they were gonna make it to Victory Lane," Lauletta said. "You know, I think Dave Rogers, our competition lead, worked super hard in the transition from (Wallace's former crew chief) Bootie (Barker), finding (current crew chief) Charles Denike in the Truck Series and getting him and Bubba together."

The last two weeks, especially, that decision to pair Wallace and Denike seems to be working out for the better. A seventh-place finish at Dover was a step in the right direction before the long overdue win at the "Brickyard" that snapped Wallace's 100-race winless streak.

"It shows that that was the right move, so I think that was a little pressure, you know, somebody that hadn't crew-chiefed in the Cup Series before and just sort of how we've been approaching this," Lauletta said.

Until Wallace's win on Sunday, the 23XI Racing team, co-owned by Denny Hamlin and NBA legend Michael Jordan, had not won a race this season, its fifth year of competition after it was founded ahead of the 2021 season.

It all goes back to the five-year plan that Hamlin put forth, and a major step forward for Wallace to lock himself into the playoffs.

"We talk about the five-year plan that Denny set out and we're in Year 5 here at 23XI," Lauletta said. "So, it's just a great feeling to get that life on the bubble over for Bubba, which we've been living for the last several years and know that we're in the playoffs and we can focus forward."

You could sense the relief and feel the emotion from Wallace as he climbed from his car and celebrated the win with his team, his wife Amanda and their son Becks. Having a win at this point in the season is something he has never experienced, and to top it off, he outdueled 2021 champion Kyle Larson on multiple overtime restarts to win the crown-jewel race.

With the win under his belt and Tyler Reddick currently 138 points to the good to make the postseason field with four races to go, 23XI Racing is set to have two of its cars racing for the title.

The 2025 season has not been a smooth one for the organization, but Hamlin's five-year vision seems to be coming to fruition with two of his drivers poised to compete for the championship.
