AJ Allmendinger entered Sunday's Daytona 500 riding a streak of four consecutive top-10 finishes in the "Great American Race" — the longest such streak of any driver in the 67th running of the Daytona 500.
However, his impressive streak at Daytona came to an end on Sunday thanks to circumstances that were completely out of his control.
Allmendinger's No. 16 Kaulig Racing Chevrolet went to the garage after only 42 laps. While Fox didn't initially report the issue with Allmendinger's car, it was revealed that the engine in Allmendinger's No. 16 expired, forcing him and the No. 16 to drop out of the race.
Allmendinger's 41st-place finish — good for last in a field of 41 cars — is the worst Daytona 500 result for the 43-year-old in 12 Daytona 500 starts.
Over the four-race streak of top-10 finishes, Allmendinger finished third, (2017) 10th, (2018) sixth (2023) and sixth (2024). He led a total of 13 laps in those four Daytona 500s, with a high of nine in 2024.
After being demoted to the NASCAR Xfinity Series in 2024, Allmendinger is back for a 10th full-time NASCAR Cup Series campaign in 2025. It marks Allmendinger's second full-time Cup Series season with Kaulig Racing. In 2023, Allmendinger finished 21st in points and earned a victory at the Charlotte Roval.
Allmendinger will attempt to bounce back at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Sunday in the Ambetter Health 400.
