Austin Hill on Cole Custer incident: ‘He lost his mind’
Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

Things got physical on the track between Austin Hill and Cole Custer in Charlotte. Custer ended up wrecked out of the race as a result. Meanwhile, Hill finished P25 in the NASCAR Xfinity Series BETMGM 300.

For one reason or another, Austin Hill had a hot head today on the track. He got into it with Sammy Smith and then at the end of the race made an embarrassing move, frankly. Cole Custer and Hill made contact and Hill felt the need to retaliate.

After the race, Hill talked about his side of things. He felt wronged by Custer for the contact on the fronstretch. Hill also says his right front being down caused him to wreck up into Custer and the wall. That part was not intentional he claims.

“Well just watching the replay, the replay’s not the greatest,” Hill said, via Dustin Albino. “They did a really good job showing everything that went on, not really. But, yeah I just came off of four, everybody’s on old tires, scuffs when we came in an pitted and I’m like in a slide trying to stay off of him. I mean his right rear barely might have skimmed the wall, didn’t hurt his car any.

“Then he completely lost his mind down the fronstretch. Doored me so hard that it cut the right front down. But getting into one, I didn’t really know the right front was down yet and I drive into one really deep because I’m going to drive in with him and right front was down and it’s not going to turn, right? So, got into him and then I probably got a little too carried away down the backstretch I didn’t let him go.

“So that part I apologize about. But I don’t apologize about racing him off of four. I do not know what he’s mad about. It’s not like he slammed the wall really hard or messed his car up any. So, I guess he’s gonna need to go back and watch it because I don’t get it. It was very uncalled for to door us as hard as he did down the fronstretch and then we cut a right front down and we take us both out. So, it is what it is though. I’ve never had a problem with Cole, so I don’t know if he’s ever had a problem with me. That was definitely weird. I’m sure we’ll talk about it, but yeah, Cole and I have always race really well together, so I’m not sure what he’s so mad about.”

Cole Custer was not happy after the race. Austin Hill and Custer tangled on the track and only one of them finished the race. It was Hill. The incident on the track was not popular among NASCAR fans online.

Many fans felt Hill stepped over the line. He did. Drivers have no excuse to do what he did to Custer after the initial wreck. Let’s take Hill’s side and say the wreck into the wall was due to the tire. Everything that happened after the wreck, inexcusable.

So, what is going to happen? I don’t think anything will. NASCAR didn’t take issue with it apparently and everything kept moving as usual. It will be interesting if this builds into a bigger problem between Hill and Custer.
