Bizarre restart crash in FireKeepers Casino 400 takes out multiple contenders

A bizarre crash on a Lap 83 restart in Sunday's NASCAR Cup Series race at Michigan International Speedway took out several contenders and involved the top two drivers in the series points standings.

As Chase Elliott and Kyle Larson led the FireKeepers Casino 400 back to green, Carson Hocevar turned down the track and made contact with John Hunter Nemechek, who then hit Bubba Wallace.

The crash that ensued involved points leader and Stage 1 winner Tyler Reddick, Denny Hamlin, Austin Dillon, Joey Logano and Zane Smith.

The blame will likely be placed on Hocevar, who is looking to become the first Michigan-born driver to win a Cup Series race at MIS.

"I don't know that Hocevar can escape the disappointment a lot of drivers are going to have here," Dale Earnhardt Jr. said on the Prime Video telecast.

Crash could have major points implications

Reddick, who has not finished outside of the top 15 this season, entered Sunday with a 97-point advantage over Hamlin in the standings. He extended that gap with his Stage 1 triumph, but it's likely that Hamlin will at least keep that gap under 100 points if not cutting into it significantly.

Hamlin was technically involved in the incident but escaped without major damage. Reddick, meanwhile, took his No. 45 Toyota to the garage.
