Brickyard 400 weather delay: When Indianapolis NASCAR race will resume

NASCAR has issued the red flag for rain with under five laps to go in Sunday’s Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Jet dryers are on the track as NASCAR looks to get back to racing at Indianapolis in 10-15 minutes, per the TNT broadcast.

For Kyle Larson, William Byron and Denny Hamlin among others, the late rain is a race saver. Bubba Wallace, who assumed the lead after Ryan Blaney came down pit road on Lap 143, had a near six-second lead over Larson. The Hendrick Motorsports driver was closing the gap, though Wallace was on pace to hold on for the win.

Now, when the race resumes, he’ll have to hold off Larson on a green-white-checkered. Larson has the fresher tires. Charles Denike, Wallace’s crew chief, said they have enough fuel for one green-white-checkered, but not two.

Can Bubba Wallace hold on to win at Indianapolis?

Obviously, a caution is the last thing Wallace wanted to see. He got a huge break after Joey Logano blew a right rear tire on Lap 135, putting him in position to take the lead once Blaney came down pit road. He entered Sunday’s race at Indianapolis riding a 100-race winless streak. Wallace has also never won a regular season points race, and what a time this would be to do it.

Wallace has camped out on the playoff cutline for some time, and a win would automatically clinch his spot in the playoffs. He showed up to Indianapolis with speed, qualifying second. Through some strategy and a lucky break, here he is — in position to get back to Victory Lane.
