Bubba Wallace wins Duel 1, Justin Allgaier races into Daytona 500

Bubba Wallace held off William Byron, Ty Dillon and Tyler Reddick to win Duel race No. 1 at Daytona International Speedway on Thursday.

The win in the 60-lap, 150-mile race gives Wallace the third-place starting spot for Sunday's Daytona 500. The Mobile, Alabama, native led 20 laps to earn 23XI Racing's second Duel win.

"Man, what a night," Wallace told Fox Sports. "Our McDonald's Toyota Camry was super fast, two different balances from being out front to being in the back. I wanted one of these Duel wins for so long, I got me one now, I'm all good."

Byron, Ty Dillon, Ross Chastain, Tyler Reddick, A.J. Allmendinger Austin Dillon, Chase Elliott, Justin Allgaier and Kyle Busch rounded out the top 10.

Other notable finishers include Martin Truex Jr. in 15th, J.J. Yeley in 17th, Chase Briscoe in 19th, Chandler Smith in 20th and Helio Castroneves in 22nd.

A ninth-place finish ensured Allgaier a spot in Sunday's Daytona 500, which will be Jr Motorsports' first Cup Series start.

"The emotions here are because of how much everybody wanted it," an emotional Allgaier told Fox Sports. "This guy (Dale Jr.) here, his lip was quivering and his hands were shaking before the race. I don't think I've ever seen that out of Dale Jr. This means a lot to our team. You can tell how much our whole shop wanted this."

"First off, I'm so proud of Justin," Dale Earnhardt Jr. told Fox Sports. "He put the team on his back those last couple of laps. He got to the top, I didn't think that was possible, but he made something work. Just a great race car. Greg Ives has put together a group of people that's motivated. This sport is amazing, I love everything about it. I can't believe that we get to race on Sunday."

A dejected Yeley came up just shy of racing his way into the Daytona 500.

"I just needed a little bit more pace," Yeley told Fox Sports. "I just didn't have that pull where I could make something happen. Unfortunately, I lost a little bit of my help. I was hoping for some carnage off turn four and it just didn't happen."

Duel 2 will determine the outside row of the starting lineup for Sunday's Daytona 500, as well as determining the final starter in Sunday's race.
