Bubba Wallace’s ‘brain is mush’ as back-to-back superspeedway races ‘mentally drained’ him
David Yeazell-USA TODAY Sports

When NASCAR announced the 2024 season schedule, many fans were concerned about the Superspeedway races, Daytona 500, and Atlanta coming back-to-back weekends. But the sanctioning body hit the sweet spot with the decision as both races proved to hit, with close finishes and a very limited number of crashes compared to the past.

The driver that has been the most consistent in terms of final finish in the last two races has been 23XI Racing’s Bubba Wallace. He is the only one to finish in the top 10 in both races, and both were top-5s. If NASCAR had been following the non-playoff championship format, Wallace would’ve been at the top of the championship table. It’s no surprise, as the No:23 driver has always been a contender in Superspeedway races.

But the last two weeks have taken a mental toll on Wallace. He took it to x (previously Twitter) to share his thoughts on the two weeks and pointed out that it was mentally taxing to compete back-to-back as such races demand more focus from the drivers. He also highlighted the work done by his spotter, Freddie Kraft, in the last two races.

May sound like a joke but my brain is mush. The psychological piece to plate racing is massive. Yes it's big any other race but receiving and digesting the info from Freddie Kraft lap by lap, corner by corner to make sure you're in the right spot is intense…The racing was very intense, [but] it's the mental side. Are we gonna crash? Am I making the right move? Every corner. Every straightaway. Every lap. It's a lot. I am mentally drained just from that. You try to be so cool, calm, and collective the whole time and its hard to do in these situations. Wallace wrote on X.

Bubba Wallace felt he could’ve been in the fight for the win if not for lap-2 damage

Wallace didn’t have the best start to the race after his No:23 Camry endured some damage on lap 2. But he was able to charge back to the top and make up for the deficit. He feels if the incident didn’t happen, he could’ve been in the fight for a race win.

We got unfortunate damage on Lap 2. I wish we could have given it a legit shot for the win but we will settle for fifth and build on it. Just never quit and gave up. All in all good day, good top-five. A lot to build on and debrief.

While Wallace wasn’t in contention for the race victory, he played an important role in setting up the three-wide epic battle between Kyle Busch, Ryan Blaney, and Daniel Suarez. He pushed Busch to the front, and if he didn’t get tight into turn 3, there was an opportunity for them to break away from the pack if things went right.
