Canelo Alvarez to serve as Busch Light Clash at the Coliseum Grand Marshal
Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Professional boxer Canelo Alvarez will serve as the Grand Marshal for the Busch Light Clash at the Coliseum this Sunday.

Alvarez, 33, is the super middleweight undisputed champion of the world, holding the WBA (super), WBC, IBF, WBO and The Ring titles. Regarded as one of the greatest boxers of all-time, Alvarez holds a professional record of 60-2-2. Alvarez has lost just one match since 2013 (Dmitry Bivol, May 2022) and won his last time out against Jermell Charlo via unanimous decision on Sept. 30, 2023.

He is the latest big-name celebrity to be announced as Grand Marshal for an upcoming NASCAR Cup Series event, as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was announced Sunday as the Grand Marshal for the 66th running of the Daytona 500 on Sunday, Feb. 18. Both will give the command for drivers to start their engines ahead of the start of each race.

Though not an official points race, the Busch Light Clash at the Coliseum is the start to the 2024 Cup Series season. The 150-lap event features 23 drivers with the field comprised of the top-five from each of the four 25-lap heat races. Drivers that finish outside the top-five in their respective heats move to the Last Chance Qualifier Race (LCQ). The LCQ will consist of 75 laps with the top-two finishers advancing to the Clash. The 23rd and final spot in the field will be awarded to the driver who finished the highest in the 2023 season driver points standings which hasn’t automatically qualified into the Clash.

Martin Truex Jr. won the event last year and is the odds-on favorite to win this year.
