Carson Hocevar was running a lap down in Mexico City when the worst possible outcome happened. Hocevar made the mistake of running into Ricky Stenhouse Jr., whom he dumped two weeks prior at Nashville Superspeedway.
Much has been said about that incident over the last seven days. Ahead of Sunday’s Great American Getaway 400 at Pocono Raceway, Hocevar revealed what was going through his mind in that moment.

“We were going like 40 mph. It was so slow motion, like, oh my God, I’m just running laps. We’re not even racing because I’m a lap down,” Hocevar told Prime Video. “Just trying to learn and figure out why I’m slow and just was too close. If I made a mistake, I just ran into him. Didn’t want to do that.”
Stenhouse told Hocevar after the race, “I’m going to beat your ass when we get back to the States.” There hasn’t been a known physical confrontation, but Stenhouse isn’t letting off the gas when it comes to threatening Hocevar. He said Saturday that when the time is right, Hocevar will get his receipt.
“Honestly, tired of talking about the kid,” Stenhouse told Dustin Long of NBC Sports. “Eventually, it will come to a head. In the right place in the right time, eventually. We’ll cross that bridge when we get there, but he probably will be looking over his shoulder for a long time. We’ll see how that goes.”
The scorecard in this rivalry is 2-0 in favor of Hocevar. He’s expecting Stenhouse to fire back. But Hocevar’s focus is on winning, and he has a good shot to do so at Pocono. Hocevar will start third on Sunday.
“Our car is really fast and back to what I feel comfortable at is turning left more often than not,” Hocevar said. “Our car’s fast, we’re up front, hopefully, we’ll just keep it there.”
