Christopher Bell's fuel gamble comes up dry at Pocono

Racing with a broken wrist, Christopher Bell and crew chief Adam Stevens swung for the fences Sunday at Pocono Raceway.

He essentially got thrown out at home plate.

After pitting for the final time with 51 laps to go, Bell and Stevens decided to try and stretch their fuel all the way to the end of the race, a tough ask at a track infamous for fuel mileage finishes.

But Bell nearly saved enough to get to the end. He was only passed for the lead by Denny Hamlin with less than five laps to go and looked to be headed towards at least a top-five finish.

Christopher Bell's strategy falls flat

That was until he radioed with two laps to go that he was out of gas. His tank ran dry less than five miles from what would've been a solid top-10 run a week removed from a harrowing crash at Michigan.

Bell finished the race in 26th as the last driver on the lead lap.

It's a frustrating result for the No. 20 team, which entered Sunday's race 10th in the standings. Bell stayed in 10th after Sunday's race but is only six points away from falling outside of the top 10 as the circuit looks ahead to San Diego next week.
