Four years ago, Connor Zilisch watched the Daytona 500 like 100,000 other people — high atop the grandstands at Daytona International Speedway.
"I didn't even know enough people to get a pit pass," said Zilisch, 19, who will kick off his rookie campaign in the NASCAR Cup Series by racing in the Daytona 500 for the first time on Sunday. "I think it just shows how quickly life can change."
Life has certainly changed quickly for Zilisch, who won 10 races in the NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series in 2025 before being called up to Cup by Trackhouse Racing for 2026 and beyond.
The teenage phenom is arguably the most hyped prospect and NASCAR history and carries massive expectations into 2026.
"You never know what's going to happen," Zilisch said. "Crazy things in life can happen. You just give it your all every day, don't give up. It shows anything's possible."
Zilisch will qualify for his first start in the "Great American Race" on Wednesday before getting his first taste of Cup Series racing at Daytona in his duel race on Thursday.
"I learned to be comfortable being uncomfortable," Zilisch said of his upbringing in racing.
That will be a key for Zilisch as he tries to navigate 500 treacherous miles at Daytona on Sunday.
