Corey Heim DQ’d after NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at Charlotte
Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Bad news for Corey Heim who was already feeling down about not winning tonight. Heim was disqualified after the Charlotte race. During postrace inspection his truck was found to be in violation of NASCAR rules.

On the final pit stop for Corey Heim, his tire changer didn’t get all of the lug nuts on the right rear wheel. A loose or missing lug nut is bad enough. Usually ends in a penalty to the crew chief.

Two lug nuts? That means disqualification. Heim’s wheel was missing three lug nuts and that is not safe for NASCAR. DQ. Bob Pockrass of FOX Sports reported the news.

Corey Heim was already disappointed with not winning tonight. After all, he swept the stages and easily had the best truck of the night. Things just didn’t work out for him in the end. On one pit stop his crew’s jack had a failure and they had to go to a backup.

Then, on the money stop, the final pit stop, his team failed to secure the lug nuts on the truck. That is what ultimately led to the disqualification. His crew likely had four on there and a couple others just weren’t tight enough and fell off. It happens from time to time.

It is clear that Heim is a special talent. He has just been too good and too consistent in the Truck Series over the last few years. Even in his two Cup Series starts replacing Erik Jones at Legacy Motor Club, he was impressive.

I think that he sees this season as his chance to win this championship. Because after this year, he will likely get the call-up to the Cup Series or at the very least, the Xfinity Series.

Corey Heim falls short to Nick Sanchez before DQ

With Corey Heim getting disqualified, it doesn’t matter if he did win this race or not. However, he really almost had it. Nick Sanchez had just enough to get to the front before Heim was able to. It gave him the aero advantage and track position he needed to run out the last 8 laps.

This win means Sanchez joins Eckes and Heim as multi-race winners on the season. Tonight’s race was also a reminder that the Truck Series is a great racing platform when the talent is there. There have been many races this year that have been entertaining, competitive, and enthralling.

Was tonight the most exciting from start to finish? No. That’s mostly because Corey Heim raced away with the first two stage wins. He wouldn’t let anyone get close. Then in the final stage, there was enough chaos to turn things upside down for many drivers.

Heim is going to learn from this. He has a great pit crew that is consistent and does great things for him 9 times out of 10. Tonight, they had terrible luck and then a bad pit stop back to back. That is hard to overcome. Don’t be shocked to see Heim drive angry in the next few weeks.
