Dale Earnhardt Jr. seems to have a lot of thoughts about the NASCAR Cup Series race that happened at Dover Motor Speedway. After the race on Sunday, Earnhardt went to X/Twitter to share his reaction.
“Dover was interesting for sure. Great run to the finish,” Dale Earnhardt Jr. wrote. “Glad NASCAR gave it the best effort to see the checkered. Indy next.”
Earnhardt, who will share more about Dover on his podcast this week, called the race for TNT and saw Denny Hamlin take the checkered flag. The Dover race featured a 56-minute red flag for rain, late-race strategy decisions and two overtime restarts, and Hamlin came out on top to win his fourth race of the season. Hamlin outlasted his Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) teammate Chase Briscoe, Alex Bowman, Kyle Larson and Ty Gibbs.
“Well, things are going pretty well there before the rain. Then obviously had to endure a few restarts there,” Hamllin said after the race. “But yeah, it was tough. Those guys gave me a run for it, no doubt about it. This whole Progressive Toyota team did amazing. Coca-Cola, Shady Rays, Sport Clips, this whole team, just done an amazing job.
“Winning here in Dover is super special to me. This is a place I’ve not been very good at the first half of my career. Having a back-to-back here over the last few years is amazing.”
Denny Hamlin had a good run on Sunday, but it looked like Chase Elliott was going to earn his second victory of the year. Elliott led 238 of the 407 laps and won the first stage. He could not get past Hamlin, but the Georgia native finished sixth. With that finish and his consistent racing the last few weeks, Elliott passed William Byron to become the NASCAR Cup Series points leader.
“Been really proud of the effort all day,” Elliott said to TNT Sports during a weather delay in the final stage. “Couple little hiccups here and there, but had a nice recovery to get back to the lead and didn’t want to see that caution. I was hoping I was settling in for the last run of the day, but it’s part of it. It can change really fast.”
