On Tuesday, former NASCAR driver Danica Patrick shared her thoughts on Walmart cutting down its diversity initiatives.
Walmart revealed this week that it has stopped selling some of its own LGBTQ-related merchandise online. It has also put an end to certain third-party sellers listing LGBTQ-themed items on their website. The well-known retailer also announced that it's winding down its nonprofit, Center for Racial Equity. It was created in 2020 after the death of George Floyd. Over $100 million was pledged by Walmart to fight systemic racism.
Patrick made it very clear that she agrees with Walmart putting less of an emphasis on diversity, equity and inclusion.
The former IndyCar sensation shared a report about Walmart slowing down its DEI efforts along with this caption: "My my how quickly things CAN change!"
Patrick might be a little late to this news, but her reaction certainly lines up with everything she's been saying in the past regarding inclusion.
As for Walmart, the company explained why it's moving on from its previous DEI efforts.
“We’ve been on a journey and know we aren’t perfect, but every decision comes from a place of wanting to foster a sense of belonging, to open doors to opportunities for all our associates, customers and suppliers and to be a Walmart for everyone,” the big-box retailer said.
Walmart said in a statement that it's willing to change for its "customers who represent all of America." Whether or not that message will be received well is another story for another time.
For now, Walmart has the approval of Patrick in the United States.
