A savvy pit call and well-executed rain dance were all Daniel Suarez needed to win Sunday's Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway and earn his first NASCAR Cup Series victory in 82 races.
Crew chief Ryan Sparks opted to put two tires on Suarez's No. 7 Chevrolet when the field came down pit road for the final time. Despite the dominant drivers of the evening in Denny Hamlin and Christopher Bell having fast cars and a tire advantage, Suarez held on after two short restarts and cautions for rain to score his third career win.
What ensued was an emotional celebration for Suarez's Spire Motorsports group, especially in the wake of the death of Kyle Busch on Thursday.
"This one really means a lot, man," Suarez told Prime Video. "I get to have my family here every year. It's been a very tough week. Kyle [Busch], he was special, man. This is for Kyle; for all his family. Every win is special, but definitely this one has a special flavor because of Kyle. To be able to win this race for him is unbelievable."
Bell, Hamlin, polesitter Tyler Reddick and Kyle Larson rounded out the top five, with Ty Gibbs and Zane Smith completing the top 10.
Other notable finishers include Shane van Gisbergen in 11th, Brad Keselowski in 15th, Alex Bowman in 17th, Bubba Wallace in 22nd and Carson Hocevar in 23rd.
Chase Briscoe, like his Joe Gibbs Racing and Toyota teammates, ran up front for much of the race but finished 34th after being involved in a crash. Defending Coke 600 winner Ross Chastain finished 35th after a wreck, while Chase Elliott also crashed out and finished 37th.
