Daytona 500 Winner Austin Cindric Faces Baptism of Fire in Adelaide Supercars Finale

Austin Cindric is set for one of the boldest challenges of his career. The 2022 Daytona 500 winner will swap NASCAR ovals for the streets of Adelaide this November, making a guest appearance in the Supercars Championship finale with Tickford Racing.

The American will drive a Ford Mustang in the twin 250km races, giving fans a rare crossover between two of motorsport’s most passionate series. But while the move is headline-grabbing, expectations should be tempered.

The Adelaide circuit is notorious for punishing even seasoned Supercars drivers, with its high-speed Turn 8 corner leaving little margin for error.

Last year’s qualifying chaos, which ended early after multiple crashes, underlined just how brutal the track can be.

Cindric’s future teammate Thomas Randle didn’t mince words about the scale of the task. “It’s going to be challenging because he’s being thrown in the deep end,” Randle said. “Adelaide is far from the easiest track. He’s going to love it, but it’ll definitely be a baptism of fire.”

Cindric has shown flashes of speed on NASCAR’s road and street courses, but he hasn’t cracked the top 10 in qualifying this season at Watkins Glen, Sonoma, Chicago, or Mexico City. On average, he’s been nearly a full second off pole — an indicator that adapting to Adelaide won’t be straightforward.

Still, his pedigree and adaptability can’t be dismissed. With preparation on Ford Performance’s simulator and guidance from Tickford, Cindric could surprise more than a few critics.

And with Supercars and NASCAR crossovers gaining momentum since Shane van Gisbergen’s NASCAR triumph in 2023, all eyes will be on how the Daytona 500 champ handles one of the toughest street circuits in the world.

For Cindric, Adelaide won’t just be another race — it’s a test of resilience, adaptability, and his ability to shine on foreign ground.
