Denny Hamlin is riding a wave of momentum going into Sunday's NASCAR Cup Series race in Mexico City, but the 44-year-old is prepared to miss the race if necessary.
Hamlin's fiancé, Jordan Fish, could give birth to the couple's third child at any moment. Hamlin was on baby watch and had a back-up driver on standby for the June 1 race at Nashville and Sunday's race at Michigan, but with international travel involved in the upcoming race weekend, Hamlin is prepared to miss the race entirely should Fish not give birth before Hamlin would have to leave.
On Tuesday, Hamlin spoke to SiriusXM NASCAR Radio about his plan for the week.
"If she hasn't had it by the time I have to leave for Mexico, I'm not going to go to Mexico," Hamlin said. "I think that's the proper thing to do. Letting her call the shots, I think that's the best thing. When she says it's time, that's what we'll do. Ultimately, I need to be there for her during, post and all those things."
@dennyhamlin joined #SXMOnTrack and gave an update on his racing plans for Mexico City if his third child hasn't arrived yet.

"Just going to make sure I spend the proper time with her, and obviously, the racing will come second this week."
Ryan Truex — a three-time winner in the NASCAR Xfinity Series and the younger brother of 2017 Cup Series champion Martin Truex Jr. — is on standby for Hamlin and the No. 11 team for the third consecutive week. Should Hamlin not make the trip to Mexico, Truex will make his first Cup Series start since 2014.
