Denny Hamlin won the NASCAR Cup Series race at Dover on Sunday and was happy he held off the field in a double-overtime thriller. After the race, Hamlin shared his reaction to winning the race and completing the NASCAR hat trick at the Monster Mile.
“Things were going pretty well there before the rain, and then obviously had to endure a few restarts there,” Denny Hamlin said on the TNT broadcast. “It was tough. Those guys gave me a run for it, no doubt about it. But this whole Progressive Toyota team did amazing. …Just an amazing job.
“Winning here at Dover is super special to me. This is a place that I have not been very good at the first half of my career. Have back-to-back here over the last few years is amazing.”
Hamlin has now won at Dover twice in as many seasons, and it was the third victory in his career. He was asked how he’s been able to have recent success at the track after struggling when he was a young driver.
“I just studied some of the greats here,” Hamlin explained. “I was very fortunate to have Martin Truex Jr. as a teammate. Jimmie Johnson, watching him win 10 times here. You learn from the greats, and you change your game to match it, and you have success like this.”
Hamlin has now won four races this season, making him the first driver to reach that mark. The 44-year-old led 67 of the 407 laps. Hamlin has 58 victories in his Cup Series career, the 11th-best total in NASCAR history.
By the looks of things, Hamlin could win at least two more races to reach 60 before the 2025 season comes to an end. In fact, the three-time Daytona 500 winner might have to do just that to claim his first championship as a driver.
