Denny Hamlin urges Goodyear not to panic and 'overreact' due to Bristol tier wear chaos
Randy Sartin-USA TODAY Sports

The 2024 Food City 500 race at Bristol will be one to remember for the ages to come. The cautions, incomprehensible tire degradation, blowouts, and much more had made the race a wild card for the drivers. However, one driver was able to conquer all these challenges to secure the victory and that was Denny Hamlin . He has now recommended Goodyear to not worry about the mayhem caused in Tennessee.

Denny Hamlin took the chequered flag at a race where only five drivers managed to finish on the lead lap. Moreover, multiple drivers across the field referred to the race as being quite bizarre due to the high levels of tire degradation and the presence of resin on the tarmac. Subsequently, the tire manufacturer was puzzled to discover the condition of its tires and would try to find a solution to this peculiar problem.

However, the Cup series race winner advised the Ohio-based tire manufacturer to not worry about the situation. Hamlin urged that the 19th-century tire manufacturing firm doesn’t need to worry about its tire’s durability even after taking a jibe at the status of tires before the race. He added that they needed to check the compound’s formula to reduce the effect of the track surface on the tires.

Don’t overreact. Whatever happened in the mixture department maybe at Goodyear, that’s something certainly that could be used, maybe not to that extent, but it could be used. I think they have to figure out what in their process changed from this batch of tires versus last, just cut it back a little bit. Denny Hamlin said in the post-race conference at Bristol

Goodyear will launch an internal investigation into the alarmingly high tire wear at Bristol

The extremely high tire wear at Bristol had made the race quite entertaining for the fans. However, for Goodyear, it must have been an eternal 500 laps as the short track seemed to take the soul out of the rubber. Subsequently, the sole tire manufacturer launched an investigation to find out the cause for the abnormally high tire wear. Following the race, Goodyear’s director of racing, Greg Stucker, looked at the peculiar situation.

It’s the same [race] package. It’s the same tire combination. It’s still a bit of an unknown as far as why it’s not behaving the same — that being the racetrack. But that’s kind of what we know now. Obviously, everybody is kind of in the same boat but some guys are able to manage through it a little bit better than others. It’s still a tough situation, and we’re going to have to try and understand exactly what’s happening, what’s different, and adjust from there. Greg Stucker said in an interview via RACER.

Stucker mentioned that the tire combination brought to the track was the same as the previous year. However, it was quite bizarre to witness such high levels of tire wear at a short track like Bristol. Subsequently, the director of racing unveiled that they would be investigating thoroughly to find the root cause for the high tire degradation in Tennessee. Moreover, Goodyear would be hoping that the race past weekend would have been a one-off and the situation would resort to normality at COTA.
