What a great surprise for NASCAR fans who will be attending the race weekend at Dover Motor Speedway later this summer. ESPN is going to be airing SportsCenter live from Dover with Miles the Monster close by.
Part of the SportsCenter: 50 States in 50 Days tour, Dover and NASCAR will be in the spotlight on Sunday, July 20. It is rare that we see much NASCAR coverage on the worldwide leader in sports.
Of course, ESPN is going to have Marty Smith on hand to help guide everyone through the stock car festivities. The Monster Mile is going to have a lot going on that weekend for fans who attend the tripleheader.
The last time the 50 States in 50 Days event was held was 20 years ago in 2005. This year, the third day of the tour will head to Dover, where ESPN will take in the Cup Series action. There is a lot going on at the track in the Fan Zone as well.
Dover Motor Speedway will construct Miles Beach, a one-acre area made to resemble the beachfront. Fans can hang out with a bar and arcade on hand, great food, and the world’s largest rubber duck.
Sounds like ESPN knows that Dover, Delaware, is the place to be this July. It is going to be hot, the racing is going to be great, and the worldwide leader is going to be there.
So, who is ready to go to Dover next month? Sounds like a good time in the sun with the sports world turning its attention to NASCAR for the weekend.
This couldn’t be a better time for ESPN to go to a NASCAR race like this. SportsCenter isn’t what is used to be, but it is still one of the preeminent shows in sports. The next four races before Dover are Pocono, Atlanta, Chicago Street Race, and Sonoma.
Three of the next four races are wildcards. Honestly, Pocono could produce a first-time winner this season as well. We’ve seen drivers like Carson Hocevar show tremendous speed at these high-speed, intermediate ovals. Then you have a superspeedway race, Atlanta, followed by a street race and road course.
The next four weeks could play out with winners like Carson Hocevar or Kyle Busch at Pocono, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. or Michael McDowell (really anyone) at Atlanta, Ty Gibbs/AJ Allmendinger at Chicago Street, and Daniel Suárez at Sonoma. Now, I don’t expect all four races to produce a wildcard winner, someone already outside of the playoff picture. But the possibility is there.
When ESPN shows up to Dover, the playoff bubble could be extremely tight. Dover isn’t a wildcard race, but when it comes to points, it is absolutely a pivotal event. After that, races at Indianapolis, Iowa, Watkins Glen, Richmond, and Daytona close out the regular season. There are 10 race winners this season so far, and a lot of other drivers looking to punch their ticket to the playoffs.
