After a report in April this year, NASCAR has now confirmed that they were the victim of a hack and ransom demand from Medusa Ransomware. The sport was asked for $4 million from the group of hackers after names and Social Security numbers were accessed in the breach.
Hackread.com was the first to report on the breach. They have now confirmed with NASCAR that the hack was real. However, the outlet has also found that there was even more sensitive info accessed by Medusa.
“A preliminary review of the leaked documents indicates they contain detailed maps of raceway grounds, staff email addresses, names and job titles, as well as credential-related information, pointing to a genuine compromise of both operational and logistical data,” Waqas of Hackread reports.
Medusa Ransomware had given NASCAR only 10 days to respond to the demand. It showed a major flaw in NASCAR’s cybersecurity infrastructure. However, those affected have been notified by NASCAR about the incident. Those victims are being offered a year of “credit monitoring and identity theft protection services through Experian.”
The hack is, of course, not ideal. That is putting it lightly. NASCAR appears to have done what it can do in order to help those involved. We will see if there are more consequences as a result of this hack in the future.
On the track, the NASCAR season is just heating up. The summer has been hot and long and there is still more of it to go. The NASCAR ransom hack is a side story on top of all of the other things going on off and on the track in the sport. That shows you how wild 2025 has been.
The 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports lawsuit is the biggest story of the year. It is more than likely going to trial. We could see the entire business model of the sport change overnight. Or we could see a solidification of how things have always been done.
A lot is on the line for the sport. Then you have the actual on-track product. Chase Elliott is now the regular season points leader. Denny Hamlin and Chase Briscoe look like they are ready to make deep playoff runs. Everyone wants to know if Kyle Larson and Christopher Bell can pull their seasons together in time after going through slumps.
