Heavy winds sent entire section of bleachers at World Wide Technology Raceway onto drag strip

The drag strip at World Wide Technology Raceway is going to need some cleanup. Heavy winds send a section of bleachers onto the strip. Thankfully, the oval NASCAR races on was not impacted.

An image of the draft strip shows an entire section of bleachers lying on the track. The seats appear to have been ripped from the ground and flipped over onto the start of the strip.

World Wide Technology Raceway hosts a number of events per year. It looks like this will take some considerable work. I’m not sure if any of the seating is salvageable after this. Here is a photo from FOX 2 showing the damage.

The NASCAR Cup Series races at World Wide Technology Raceway, formerly known as Gateway Motorsports Park, on June 2. Many fans still refer to the track as Gateway. The Midwest had a series of storms on Thursday evening, including the St. Louis area.

It appears that things got intense at the race track. You really don’t see bleachers that big being thrown around. With the bad weather getting ready to take over Talladega weekend, maybe it’s another sign that Mother Nature does not approve of motorsports.

Chris Blair, GM of WWTR, noted on X/Twitter that racing is canceled for this week. However, the track will host a Tough Mudder event next week and drag racing will continue in two weeks with NMCA.

World Wide Technology Raceway coming up soon

When NASCAR gets to World Wide Technology Raceway this year, it will be the second half of the season. The first race after the All-Star Race is the Coca-Cola 600. Then the schedule heads to Illinois. Last year, it was Kyle Busch who won the race and rather easily.

Speaking of Busch, what is up with RCR? There are four races between now and the All-Star Race. Is it possible that we are going to see Busch go winless through the next month? With the way things are going with that No. 8 team, it wouldn’t shock me.

Whatever edge they had at the start of 2023 is gone now. The setups are not working the same. When they do have speed, a pit road penalty or wreck ruins their day. However, there was a little bright spot this past Sunday at Texas.

Despite early season struggles, both Kyle Busch and Austin Dillon scored top-10 finishes. Dillon paced the RCR group, which included Austin Hill, as he raced to a P8 finish. Busch was right behind in P9.

With how dominant Busch was at World Wide Technology Raceway, I expect him to do well again. However, that hasn’t been the case this season with that No. 8 team.
