Sports fans spend a lot of time searching for the next hidden gem. IMSA might be it.
On an otherwise light Sunday sports slate, the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship at Watkins Glen was the perfect afternoon watch on Peacock. Even if endurance racing isn’t your favorite discipline, there’s something oddly relaxing about it. The constant hum of prototypes flying by, strategy unfolding over hours and cars weaving through traffic makes for outstanding “white noise” while still delivering plenty of excitement when the action ramps up.
And make no mistake—these cars are ridiculously fast.
If you’re used to watching NASCAR at Watkins Glen, the IMSA GTP prototypes look like they’re playing an entirely different sport. They brake later, corner harder and rocket through the Esses with an aggression that’s almost hard to believe. It’s one of the few times you’ll watch the same circuit and feel like you’re seeing it in a completely new way.
Then there’s the fan experience.
Endurance racing has quietly become one of motorsports’ best-kept secrets. Camping and tailgating at races like Watkins Glen, Road America and Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta have developed loyal followings, with fans spending entire weekends grilling, relaxing and watching some of the world’s best sports cars race into the evening.
You don’t have to memorize every manufacturer or driver to enjoy it. Just turn it on, kick back and let the sound of high-performance machines do the rest.
IMSA may not have NASCAR’s television audience, but for racing fans looking for something different, it remains one of the most underrated series in motorsports.
