This weekend Justin Allgaier is on-call in case Kyle Larson isn’t able to make it to Charlotte in time after the Indy 500. Allgaier has been in NASCAR for years and Hendrick Motorsports is happy to have him as the backup driver.

Kyle Larson plans on racing at Indy and Charlotte on Sunday. However, there is an unfortunate weather forecast for Sunday in Indianapolis. A delay in the race could mean disaster for Larson’s Double Duty attempt.

As for Justin Allgaier, the Xfinity Series driver is hoping he won’t be needed. Even so, he will be part of team debriefs and will join Hendrick throughout the practice and qualifying process.

Good news, he fits in Kyle Larson’s seat, even if they had to stretch the seatbelts a bit.

“Yeah so I’ll be here for tomorrow for practice and qualifying and sit in on what they’re doing,” Allgaier said about his role as Larson’s backup, via Bob Pockrass of FOX Sports. “I actually fit really well oddly enough in Kyle’s seat. The seatbelts were only the little bit of an issue. I’m a little fluffier than he is, so getting those together wasn’t always the easiest thing. But the other part of that is, as Hendrick Motorsports, safety has always been a huge part of their initiative, I mean with the seat side of things and what they do on the race track.

“I think I was there to like 8 or 9 o’clock the other night just trying to go through all the different scenarios of seatbelts and what we can do, just making sure both sides are comfortable. So, we’ll got through some things tomorrow with Kyle when he gets here and gets in the car and then obviously I’ll get to listen in and see what they’re going through and be here throughout the weekend whenever they need me.”

Justin Allgaier is a very capable race car driver to replace Kyle Larson in an emergency. He tried his hand at the Cup Series ten years ago and decided that it wasn’t for him. That time with HScott Motorsports was rough. However, he has since rebuilt himself.

In the Xfinity Series, Allgaier has more top-10 finishes than any other driver. He also has 24 wins to his name in the series. If he has to replace Kyle Larson, he will do just fine. Let’s just hope we don’t have to see that scenario play out, like Allgaier himself said.
