Kevin Harvick describes the challenge of Coca-Cola 600, Kyle Larson attempting Indy 500 double

This Sunday, Kyle Larson will attempt to drive 1,100 miles across two races: The Indy 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Only four drivers have attempted to pull off the Indy-Charlotte Double and only one has successfully run all 1,100 miles. That was Tony Stewart, who finished sixth in the 2001 Indy 500 before jetting over to Charlotte and finishing third in the Coca-Cola 600.

Kevin Harvick, no stranger to the Coca-Cola 600, described the challenges Larson will face in completing both during this week’s “Happy Hour” podcast.

“We saw Tony Stewart come back one year when he did his double,” Harvick said. “First thing he did was spin out. So, I mean he’s gonna have driven hopefully 500 miles in the Indy 500 and hop back over and that amount of time in the same day is, that’s a difficult transition. Not that I’ve ever done it, but you know, I’ve seen the best of them have trouble with that as they come back to get in the car. So, super long day for Larson and everything that he has to do so he’s definitely, I’m sure gonna plan with everybody as to how he needs to take care of itself.”

Kyle Larson growing concerned about weather ruining Indy 500 chances

Beyond the physical and mental rigors that go into pulling off the Indy-Charlotte Double, there are some factors out of Larson’s control that could hurt his chances. The main one is weather, as the current forecast calls for a 40-80% chance of rain in Indianapolis this weekend, as well as a 30-40% chance of rain in Charlotte.

Larson admitted he’s growing concerned with the prospect of having to pick one race over the other.

“You can have all these plans and backup plans and backup plans for the backup plan,” Larson said Thursday. “But you just can’t really do anything or react until it’s kind of the moment. That’s what’s a little bit stressful.”

If it does indeed rain in Indianapolis on Sunday, Larson would prefer for it to happen all day in hopes of the Indy 500 getting pushed to another day.

“Yeah, it doesn’t look too promising for Indy on Sunday, but I think for me where I sit, if it’s going to rain, I hope it rains all day,” Larson said. “That way it can just get pushed to Monday or something, and then Charlotte is not going to rain, I just hope it doesn’t rain, and we can get it in on Sunday night and then come here Monday.”

Larson will start fifth in the 108th Running of the Indy 500.
