Kevin Harvick urges NASCAR to 'put the freaking horsepower in the car' in Next-Gen test runs
Stephanie Amador / USA TODAY NETWORK

2014 NASCAR Cup Series champion Kevin Harvick has brought back the horsepower debate back yet again. Since the introduction of the Next-Gen cars in 2022, one of the biggest demands by the driver as well as the team was to increase the horsepower to fix the short track racing. Most believes it’s the best solution for the lack of passing and traffic issue with the Next-Gen cars.

Recently following the Bristol race and the first 30 laps of Richmond, proved that having more tier wear is another significant way to fix the issue. This has slightly reduced the discussion around HP, but via his podcast retired champion Kevin Harvick has made arguments in support of increasing horsepower and has given NASCAR a way to end the debate once and for all.

He asked NASCAR to host a Next-Gen car test session like they do many times over a season and use cars with increased horsepower in it. Harvick believes by allowing the three engine builders of the sport with a increased HP would help NASCAR to find if it’s the right way forward and end all the possible debates around it.

Well, the first thing we need to do is put the freaking horsepower in the car at one of these damn tests and let’s see if it’s better. Okay? We’ve got three different engine builders, build an engine. Please build me an engine and just tell me if it’s better, if it’s not I will shut up. Okay? And if it is better let’s give the engine departments to get there next year so we can have more horsepower. If not, then let’s be done with it. Kevin Harvick said via Happy Hour podcast.

Kevin Harvick believes this would be the right start if NASCAR decides to increase horsepower

The ex-SHR driver also pointed out that increasing the horsepower won’t be an easy task as the teams are making it sound. He asserted that the manufacturers should be given enough time to understand what the things needed to develop engines with the required horsepower.

So, there’s way more to it than just turning the spigot on and saying ‘Hey, we want more horsepower.’ And I think you have to be fair to the engine shops and give them a path to get there and understand what the rotation would be, what the development would be, all the things that come with changing it. Kevin Harvick said.

As highlighted by the former champion, the debate around horsepower won’t stop until NASCAR do a test or be transparent with the team about why this isn’t the path the sanctioning body wants to take for the future. The situation should be sorted soon as the short-track racing isn’t getting any good in the Next-Gen era.
