Following his wreck in practice, Kyle Busch has lost all of his trust in the Richard Childress Racing Chevrolets he drives. Just when he thought he could trust the car he was driving, it broke on him in Turn 1, got loose, and he went right into the wall. Not a great day for the NASCAR champion.
Since the second half of the 2023 season, RCR has been off. Something is missing from those race cars. Speed, grip, handling – if it isn’t one thing, then it’s the other for this organization.
That was perfectly captured by Group 1 in practice today. Busch goes P2 and as the TNT broadcast was praising him, he wound up head-on into the wall.
After the wreck, Kyle Busch ripped his car. This RCR team is being challenged by its driver and by the team owner to do better.
“Came out of Turn 4 really hot and heavy and hard on it. And you know, went off into Turn 1 with too much trust, and chattered the right rear and then overcorrected it and smacked the fence,” Busch said. “So, yeah, just not real sure how to find more trust or when you feel something good in one corner, it’s not there in he next.”
Kyle Busch has had a lot of disappointing races at RCR. Things haven’t clicked since he won those three races in 2023. Busch hasn’t given up on the men and women on his team, but the trust in the cars has drastically gone away.
“Obviously, it’s tough for the guys. Hate it for the guys. Everybody at RCR, especially the 8 crew here. I’m sure we’ll rely on some of the 3 guys to try to help us get the backup car prepared overnight and get us into the race tomorrow.
“I mean, obviously we had decent speed, you know, just trying to work on up to it and consistently just get better and better with laps. So, that’ll be about the same thing we got to do tomorrow. Just kind of, you know, I was probably built up to about 75, 80 percent trust. Now I’m back to zero again, you know. So, just trying to figure all that out. Lap by lap.”
Kyle Busch is going to a backup car for this Sunday. He now has to fight his way from the back of the field to the front. It won’t be impossible, but it sure is improbable. Busch knows he needs a win to make the playoffs. It seems far off right now.
