It hasn’t been the kind of day Kyle Larson would have hoped for. His attempt to run the double with the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 on the same day has come up empty again.
Larson wrecked out of the Coca-Cola 600 in the third stage when he was caught up in the mess from another wreck on the track. His back right tire was struck going about 180 miles per hour, knocking it off kilter and ending Larson’s day.
That came after he spun in the Indy 500 and crashed on Lap 93, ending his race. It made transport to Charlotte easier, but unfortunately the end results won’t be what Kyle Larson had hoped for.
After exiting his car at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Larson was approached by media. The obvious question: Will he attempt to run the double again after two years of disappointments?
“I think it would be fun,” Larson told Alan Cavanna, per PRN Live. “I don’t know, it’s been bad two years in a row … I’d love to run the Indy 500 again, but the double is just so tough. Just a bummer I didn’t get to complete it.”
Even though things didn’t go according to plan in the Indy 500, Kyle Larson can rest a little easier knowing he likely would have been pulled out of the car anyway. At the 4 p.m. ET cutoff time his team had set, there were still about 50 laps to go in the Indy 500.
So he would have been forced to ditch that race early anyway, because the NASCAR Cup Series penalty was too steep to ignore. Should Larson have missed the start of the Coca-Cola 600, he would have forfeited all of his playoff points for the entire season.
That’s obviously a non-starter for one of the top championship competitors. Kyle Larson entered the day leading the Cup Series points standings with 469 points.
He also leads the field in playoff points accumulated already. Larson is sitting on 23 playoff points as a result of his three wins and several stage wins.
In any case, it’ll be interesting to see if Kyle Larson presses forward with his pursuit of the double in future years. So far it’s been a pretty significant bust.
